Flying Solo by Ralph Fletcher

I don't know about you but I am so excited to get started with all of my fun plans this year! Not that I'm rushing summer along... It hasn't been that hot around here so it doesn't feel like summer any way. As I type I am sitting here in a sweater.... in July. Anyway, I am SUPER EXCITED to start the year with Flying Solo by Ralph Fletcher.

This book has recently offered by Scholastic for $1 so, I bought a class set. I have an EdHelper.com account which is great for novel studies! If you have never been to that site, check it out! It's also a great resource for extra things such as sub work or in-school work. On EdHelper.com I found awesome journal responses, quizzes, as well as an end of the book project menu! They have SOOO many novels on there! I'm sure that the one you plan to read is there! You can even tailor it to the grade level you teach. Today, I made my Wordle which I will show them on Day 1 of our reading....

If you would like me to tailor this to your class let me know!

Summarize & Paraphrase
Tuesday, April 29, 2014
No comments
Hello, all! So, in my class some of my students are still having issues with summarizing and paraphrasing. Not so much the difference between the two, more writing it on their own. With my resources I didn't find anything else that I wanted to give them to practice so, today I made my own worksheet. I also decided I'd share! :)

My students really enjoy doing this for homework instead of a boring old spelling assignment. They love having choices! I have been looking around for a spelling tic-tac-toe that I absolutely loved and just decided to make my own.

Saint Patrick's Day Writing

I created this Saint Patrick's Day story starter this morning in hopes that I may get to use it on Monday. I'm subbing on Saint Patrick's Day this year in a second grade class. I just bought a huge bag of gold coins so that I could sent up a "treasure hunt" that the leprechaun left for them while they were at recess!

After today I need a serious nap. I took two half day sub jobs and went from one school in the morning to another in the afternoon. It sounded fine but, today in the morning I was in three different classrooms! Then, I realized I would have pretty much no time to eat lunch in between. It was kinda crazy. But, I do love crazy!

Sub Bag Ready To Go!

I thought I would share what goes inside my sub bag. I'm sure I will add more or take away some as time goes on but, here's what I'm starting with. I looked at a few other sub bloggers to see what they have and went from there based on my experience and needs.
Bag from Thrity One Gifts
- Foldable File Folder -
To keep all my printables in for emergency plans. I have it organized based on grade level. I also keep copies of my sub report in here.
- Treasure Supplies & Behavior Management -
I have two bags full of goodies (pencils, erasers, stretchy bracelets, bookmarks, bubbles, etc)
I give out tickets throughout the day, the kids write their name on the back and put the ticket in my flower box. At the end of the day I pull three names and they get to pick from the bags.
- Stickers -
- Avery Return Address Labels -
For name tags :)
They are WAYYYY cheaper than actual name tags.
- Fun Books -
I try to choose books that I already know some activities for just in case.
- Whistle -
For those days you may have recess duty.
- USB Flash Drive -
For all my emergency sub plans.
- Education Magazines -
To read during my lunch break.
- LOTS of pens and pencils. & Chapstick, of course! -
Black & White -- 3 Outfits
I had an event this week and had to wear a black or black & white outfit. Here are the three choices I came up with. I hope you had a great weekend! I am beginning my first full week of subbing this week and am THRILLED! I started Friday with a half day and I loved it! All the teachers in the building told me that it can be a really rough school and to not get discouraged but, I thought it was great. Working with those kids is so rewarding! I can't wait to share tips and stories!

Mondrian With A Twist....
Monday, February 3, 2014
No comments
I'm sure that most of us are at least vaguely familiar with the paintings by Piet Mondrian using color block and black line techniques. In school age we did a similar project stemming off of his designs. I drew the black lines on the poster board and then each student chose a square to design. When they were done, it turned into an awesome work of art! Enjoy!

Snowman Looking Up!
The kids loved this project yesterday! I just showed them my example that I made and gave them the needed materials. Since they are older kids, I didn't give them much instruction on how to create it because I wanted it to be their creation. I did start the project by asking why he doesn't have eyes. This helped them realize what makes him look like he's looking up. Enjoy!

This is a cute project that I did yesterday with my school agers. They loved it & I was thrilled because I wasn't sure how they would feel about this craft. Having some fourth graders in the mix throws it off sometimes. I hope your class enjoys this as much as mine did! (The example is mine because I forgot to take pictures of theirs)

Mustard Cardigan & Blue Khakis
Happy Friday!!! I finally get to start subbing soon! Yay! Just one month until all the paperwork goes through and then I am on my way! Not that I don't love all my Phonics & Math kids at the center but, I really can't wait to get back in the public district with the older kids. Even if it's just subbing....I'm so excited! Oh, and as a side note, maybe you will be less upset with my lack of posts lately if I give you an inside look of my week this week.....my dog ate my Kindle, I fell down the stairs, AND I dropped my phone in the toilet while cleaning the bathroom. Hooray. Let's just say... I've never been more glad to see Friday!

Great TPT Finds

Happy New Year everyone! I hope you all had a safe and fun New Year's Eve. Believe it or not, this is the first NYE that I have ever spent at a public bar/party/whatnot (aside from once when my family went to a hotel). This year we went to the casino to celebrate! Perfect place to celebrate NYE. It's pretty low-key and isn't a huge "partying/clubbing" atmosphere. Anyway, back to the good stuff... I decided to go on TPT tonight to see if I could find anything fun before I head back to work tomorrow. I work with small groups all day so I pretty much am able to change it up whenever and basically take it one day at a time if I so choose. If you are bored take a look at the freebies on there! This one in particular I really liked:
It's a big pack of story element posters. I also found a number pack, and shape posters which will be great for my office! Below is also a cute poster that I am going to put up about letter shapes. Maybe I am just out of the loop but I have never seen this before!
