This book is AWESOME! It follows two children living in Sudan at different time periods. One is a young boy named Salva and he is living during the war in the 1980's. He is a refugee and is a wonderful character for students to see true perseverance. Nya is a girl who lives in Sudan during present day and has to walk eight hours a day to fetch water for her family. This book brings an issue to light for students that they probably have not heard much about -- the Sudan water shortage. I highly recommend it for any grades from third and up. It also lends itself to so many other projects and learning opportunities. I have created a novel study unit to make this available to use in the classroom. I can't wait to read this with my class!
